What is transportation logistics?

Transportation logistics is a branch of logistics that deals with the organization and management of the delivery and transportation of goods and merchandise to their final destinations. In general, it is responsible for planning, coordinating and controlling the transportation of any material object through the use of different means of transportation, such as trucks, trains, ships, planes, and others. This is done with the objective of guaranteeing that the goods reach their destination in the correct quantity, condition and time, efficiently and effectively. Transportation logistics is also responsible for cost management, routing planning, and choosing the appropriate means of transportation for each type of good and destination.

Land Trasnsportation in Mexico: New and old challenges

The cargo transportation industry is, without a doubt, a fundamental link in the global logistics chain. In Mexican territory, for example, it was thanks to this modality that in the last two years—of the pandemic—we were able to put down the ghost of the shortage of basic consumer products.

Although the first half of 2022 has been one of recovery for land transport companies, it is also true that we have faced bottlenecks derived from various challenges, known and unknown, ranging from a shortage of operators, road insecurity or recent tax regulations to the war between Russia and Ukraine.

Beyond that, each of these challenges—and all those that were not mentioned—mean an opportunity for improvement and the possibility of betting on the professionalization of the actors in this field; in order to increase the quality of service and minimize risks and/or mishaps due to lack of training, safety or adequate maintenance of the units.

Equally important are the topics related to the lack of public works on our country’s roads, in the absence of adequate government legislation in this regard; which results in commercial uncertainty, both for the service provider and its client.

Being a carrier in Mexico is much more complicated than being one in the US or Europe. We must, in fact, adapt their good ways of operation to our environment, seeking to raise the level of service to international standards. Better administrative practices and greater discipline on the part of operators are fundamental factors to achieve this. We still have many areas of opportunity in this sector, which should motivate us to generate, once and for all, a 100% professional transportation scheme.

Safety comes first: monitoring center & AEO certification

The Multimodal Monitoring Center is a state-of-the-art space that has a high-definition Videowall and advanced GPS technology, from which a team of trained operators permanently monitors its different fleets of units, agilely interpreting the video material and the series of data that show the geofences (virtual geographical delimitations) established for the units.

This allows them to accurately record and manage the movements made by their trucks and, therefore, react immediately to any type of mishap or extraordinary event that could occur during the different journeys; preventing the merchandise of its logistics partners from being at risk and, in turn, allowing them to obtain a mirror account that allows them to stay aware of the routes of their loads in real time.

This is one of the key tools that make up the company’s strategic security plan; which will be complemented in the coming months with their participation in the Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) certification program, with which they seek to strengthen the security of their logistics and transportation operations through the implementation and compliance of a series of security standards. and administrative processes, aimed at mitigating risks and/or illegal acts.

Thanks to this certification, Multimodal Logistics of Altamira (MLA), the segment dedicated to foreign transportation of Multimodal, will soon be recognized as a secure company before the customs authority, being endorsed as such by its logistics partners and continuing as it has been for more than two decades. with its primary task, that of making Logistics that gives Confidence!

Multimodal reduces logistics costs using the Panama Canal

At Multimodal, using Logistics Intelligence, we concluded that a lot of cargo going to Asia and produced in places near the port of Altamira, such as San Luis Potosi or Monterrey, should leave through this port and not through the Pacific. We reached this conclusion by analyzing the costs of land transportation and the costs of maritime transportation starting from our Port of Altamira and using the Panama Canal. In comparison, we performed the same exercise using Manzanillo, from where the goods travel many more kilometers. The total savings in this exercise is 700 USD per container, in addition to avoiding risks by reducing the overland route. And if we add to this the fact that Multimodal can match the export cargo with the import cargo of one of our many customers, it is even more economical!

MULTIMODAL: Logistics and the Panama Canal

In Multimodal we are logistics operators that advise our customers to reduce costs, avoid delays and reduce storage. For this reason, we have an area of Logistics Intelligence where a team of people study the different modes of transport, logistics flows, shipping lines routes, the cost of ports and the cost of land transport, among other factors that influence to offer the best logistics solution, developed to suit the needs of each of our customers.
Today we will talk about the Panama Canal as an option to reduce costs and make logistics efficient. We start from the assumption that all cargo going to China, Japan, or South Korea, must leave through a Pacific port, Manzanillo, or Lazaro Cardenas. At Multimodal, using Logistics Intelligence, we concluded that in many cases cargo going to Asia and produced near the port of Altamira, such as San Luis Potosi or Monterrey, must leave through this port and not through a Pacific port. We reached this conclusion by analyzing the costs of land transportation and the costs of maritime transportation leaving through Altamira, using the Panama Canal, and leaving through Manzanillo, traveling many more kilometers by road. Here is an example: Cargo departure location: Monterrey, Nuevo Leon. Cargo destination: Osaka, Japan.
